Chapter 16
It had been easier than expected to slice through the old manâs neck. Practicing with the pig carcasses had helped. Of course, there was a big difference between a dead animal and the desperate thrashing of a man trying in vain to save his life, but in terms of the power needed to complete the task, it had been a worthwhile exercise.
The force required to cut to that level had been difficult to maintain, with all the jerking and bucking, but the alternative of leaving the job unfinished and being caught had been an excellent motivator. The wire had dug hard into the thick gloves. It was a miracle that no tell-tale signs had been left on the skin.
What hadnât been anticipated was just how messy the job would be. Luckily, the heavy plastic apron had caught any errant splashes, and the smooth sleeves had prohibited the fight for purchase by Campbellâs clawing fingers. The foresight in wearing a protective mask had been inspired. The getup was restrictive, but the scientists managed fine with it, and the element of surprise had helped with any difficulties in performing the actual act.
There had been the worry that Campbellâs frantic kicking under his desk would attract the attention of his assistant on the other side of the door, but nothing had eventuated. If the man had thought to check on his boss at that particular time, it would all have been over. For one of them, at least. Luckily, for them both, that hadnât happened.
The possibility of the body making more noise if it fell forward had been the reason for lowering Campbell to the table. There was no other reason for the way the body was laid out. It would be dramatic any way he was found, such was the mess that had been left.
It had been difficult not to look at his tortured face in the act of laying the body down. The skin swollen, tongue engorged, eyes bulging in apparent shock and reprimand. The cut had been the worst, though, the head sliding back against the only part of the neck still attached as his head was laid on the desk. It had resulted in a horror at the act that had been committed, a flash of regret, or if not regret, a sorrow of sorts.
There had been no time for pause, but that image would be burned deep behind anyoneâs eyes, no matter how many times theyâd killed before, how cold-hearted they became. How could it not?
It was nerve-wracking to ball the outfit up and hide it behind a roof tile in the corridor beyond. Thrilling, yet nerve-wracking. All anyone had to do was lift one of the white squares, poke their head into the space, and theyâd find it. That would be it. Game over. No one had thought to look so far, but it couldnât be risked for long. All evidence would be removed soon enough. It had to remain there for the moment, couldnât have been removed at the time for risk of being discovered.
